Job Openings and Labor Turnover – August 2023
On Tuesday (10-3-23), the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for August. According to the JOLTS report, as of the last business day in August, the number and rate of job openings increased by 690,000 to 9.6 million and 5.8%, respectively.
The number of hires held steady at 5.9 million and the rate was unchanged at 3.7%. The number of hires changed little in all industries.
The total number of separations changed little changed at 5.7 million, and the rate remained unchanged at 3.6%.
The number of quits changed little at 3.6 million, and the rate was unchanged at 2.3%.
The number of layoffs and discharges changed little at 1.7 million, and the rate held at 1.1%.
The number of other separations was little changed at 357,000.
The layoff and discharge rates for establishments with 1 to 9 employees decreased. Job openings, hires, and total separation rates were little changed for establishments with 5,000 or more employees.
