On Friday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that real gross domestic product (GDP) declined 0.2% in 2025Q4, after rising 0.6% in Q3.
StatCan said the Q4 decrease reflected withdrawals of business inventories following inventory accumulations in Q3. Offsetting part of the decline were higher exports, household spending, and government capital investment.
On a per capita basis, GDP was unchanged in Q4 after increasing 0.5% in Q3.
For all of 2025, real GDP increased 1.7%, marking the slowest pace of annual growth since the decline in 2020. Lower exports, particularly to the US, were the main contributor to the slower growth in 2025.
