Canadian Payroll Employment Holds Steady in June
Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, June 2026
On Thursday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that payroll employment was little changed in June, with a gain of 4,800 jobs. This followed an increase of 0.2%, or 45,000, in May. Year-over-year, employment was up by 155,000.
Payroll employment increased in public administration by 0.8%, or 10,600 positions; construction by 0.2%, or 2,000 jobs; and management of companies and enterprises by 0.8%, or 900 positions.
Declines were recorded in manufacturing, down 0.5%, or 7,200 jobs; accommodation and food services, down 0.5%, or 6,100 positions; retail trade, down 0.2%, or 3,900 jobs; and professional, scientific, and technical services, down 0.1%, or 1,600 positions.
Job vacancies edged higher by 10,500 to 509,100 in June. Year-over-year, vacancies were up 2.8%, or 13,800 positions. There were 2.9 unemployed persons for every vacancy, down from 3.0 in May and 3.1 in June 2025.
