Canadian Job Vacancies Steady in Q2
Job vacancies little changed in the second quarter of 2026
On Tuesday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that job vacancies held steady at 510,200 in Q2, following a 2.7% increase (13,300) in Q1. Vacancies for part-time jobs rose 2.8%, or 3,600, while vacancies for full-time jobs and permanent and temporary positions were little changed.
Year-over-year, overall job vacancies were also little changed in Q2. Vacancies for temporary positions rose 4.4%, or 4,000, while vacancies for permanent, full-time, and part-time jobs were little changed.
Total labor demand—the sum of filled and vacant positions—rose 0.3%, or 58,100, in Q2, driven by a 0.3% (55,600) increase in payroll employment. Year-over-year, total labor demand increased 1.0%, or 181,100, while payroll employment rose 1.0% (78,000).
There were 3.0 unemployed persons for every job vacancy in Q2, unchanged from Q1 but down slightly from 3.1 in 2025Q2.
